New CIA Spinoff Update Dashes Hopes for FBI: Most Wanted’s Fugitive Task Force Return

While FBI: Most Wanted came to an end with closure for all characters, there was still hope that we would see them again. With the new FBI spinoff, CIA, being set in New York, this opened the door for the Fugitive Task Force to appear, and I wouldn’t have complained if FBI: Most Wanted's Hana Gibson (Keisha Castle-Hughes) made the move from the Fugitive Task Force to this new team.

There is some bad news with a recent update from the CIA showrunner David Hudgins, which makes it clear that the Fugitive Task Force’s story will not continue in the new Dick Wolf universe TV series. This doesn’t completely rule out cameos from happening, and there could be ways to update us via the two current shows considering how they all interconnect. After all, there have been crossover events in the past, and this could still be possible moving forward.

Showrunner David Hudgins Confirms That Nobody From FBI: Most Wanted Will Appear In CIA (For Now)

The Fugitive Task Force Will Run Separately From Other Teams

  • I Expected FBI - Most Wanted's Ending, But I'm Still Conflicted About 1 Character's Final Fate
  • FBI: Most Wanted cast lookin up in season 6 episode 22 finale
  • Hana smiling in FBI: Most Wanted
  • Ray smiling and drinking wine in FBI: Most Wanted
  • Nina helping to contain a hostage situation by drawing her weapon in a church in FBI: Most Wanted

As much as we would love to see the CIA-FBI team work with the Fugitive Task Force, this isn’t going to happen. At least, not right away, and that does arguably make a lot of sense. The new FBI spinoff will want to be able to stand on its own two feet, and constantly relying on cameos from other shows doesn’t give it that chance. It is disappointing, considering we know that the Fugitive Task Force will continue to run with the HQ in New York.

“CIA is its own show, although it does exist in the universe of the mother ship FBI.”

The focus for CIA is on the partnership between the FBI and the CIA. There will be cases of the week, which will come from both organizations, but the “odd couple” relationship between CIA lead Tom Ellis’ Hart Hoxton and the still-to-be-cast FBI agent will be the thing Hudgins believes will pull people in. While this news is disappointing, at least the FBI: Most Wanted finale was satisfying, as it brought closure to each of the characters, so it's not as important to find out where they are now.

How CIA Can Still Feature Most Wanted Characters (Even Not As Series Regulars)

Cameos Could Still Be Possible In The Future

  • FBI Most Wanted Edwin Hodge as Ray Cannon
  • Barnes and Hana talking in FBI Most Wanted season 6 episode 21
  • FBI Most Wanted Sheryl Negotiating With SWAT

While CIA is currently ruling out Most Wanted characters from showing up, this doesn’t mean it’s not possible at all. Even without being series regulars, cameos could be possible depending on where the cases are coming from or the type of help within the FBI that’s needed. Both Most Wanted and International have had cameo appearances and mentions of characters from the mothership in the past, such as Jubal on the video screen or characters visiting Isobel.

This is how the new series in the FBI universe could bring in Most Wanted characters in the future. Barnes could end up with a case that her Fugitive Task Force isn’t able to take on, and she could pass it onto the CIA-FBI team. Alternatively, the new team may need someone more experienced in computer hacking or catfishing, prompting a call to Hana for assistance as a one-time solution.

Another option to bring some Most Wanted characters in is to have the two teams pursuing the same case without realizing it. This can set them up for a mini-crossover event, allowing us to get caught up with how the Fugitive Task Force is doing with Barnes in charge. One-off appearances of FBI: Most Wanted, and even International, characters will always be appreciated if the story is right.
